This was a 4 day Everett Mountaineers trip with friends to do the Golden Lakes Loop in the Chelan Sawtooth Mtn.'s. We parked at the Crater Lake Trailhead, hiked Trail #431 (past the junctions with Crater Lake Trail #416 and Martin Lakes Trail #429) 8 miles over Horsehead Pass and down to Boiling Lake. We woke the following morning to find 2" to 3" of new snow blanketing the lakeshore, the surrounding peaks and the now frosted larch. Half the group went S to a 7400' saddle below Pt. 8270 (Cheops Peak) and the other NW toward Hoodoo Pass west of Mt. Bigelow.
I chose the group bound for Martin Peak. From the lake we aimed for a saddle (7440') below Cheops and made a long rising traverse on the west side Martin's N ridge until just below the top, where we gained the ridge and followed it to the summit. Good rock scrambling here. We made our way back to the saddle below Cheops, turned east, ascending the west ridge, crossed on to the west face at a cliff band and climbed snow covered talus to the summit ridge. Took us a short traverse to get to the apparent high point where we got some lunch. We left the summit on the east side, crossed the easier terrain on that face, continued around the south side to the west ridge and dropped back to the saddle and the lake. Good day scrambling was had by both groups.
On the third day, we moved camp to Cooney Lake (hoping against hope to run into Cheyenne along the way). As Trail #1359.3 heads south it crosses a pass SE of Pt. 7228, where we dropped packs and
gave Old Maid Mtn a try. Turned out to be a much longer trip than it looks to be on the maps and only the really fleet of foot made the summit (you can bet it wasn't me). In fact, only one of us made it.
Back to the packs and off we went to Angels Staircase (a real butt-kicker with overnight gear) and down to Cooney Lake. A little more snow overnight (a morning snowball fight) and an uneventful hike out on Trail #429 completed the loop. Great trip with really good people. This has to be one of my favorite areas in the state.
