Hex is a good winter trip since it can be done in most all conditions.  The Salmon La Sac road is plowed to beyond Newport Creek so access is best with all wheel or 4 wheel drive.  The route we took involved a loop, up one ridge and then down another on either side of Newport Creek. In high avalanche conditions, it might be safer to ascend and descend the SW ridge where the summer trail is located, as to the east we crossed or descended open slopes.  Good views when the weather cooperates but look for snowmobiles buzzing around the east side of the creek (another reason not to do the loop I guess).

Directions:
Follow I-90 east across Snoqualmie Pass to Hwy. 903/Bullfrog Road (just before the first Cle Elum exit).  Exit and head north through the towns of Roslyn and Ronald where Hwy. 903 becomes the Salmon La Sac Road.  Continue until you see the sign for Newport Creek.  This was a winter trip, so we parked just west of the creek bridge where a turnout was available.  In the summer, I think you can drive to the trailhead at about 3450'.
