Baring Mtn.sits closely north of Hwy 2 between Gold Bar and Skykomish. It's distinctive double summit is visible from many points around the sound.
We parked at the Barclay Lake Trailhead but followed an old road that runs from behind the toilet and above the lake trail. We didn't have to go far before we found a small cairn and a boot path to the right. The path follows a creek bed as it gains 1700' to the top of the west ridge. We found the going easier and much less brushy paralelling the creek off trail to the left.
The ridge walk is a pleasant interlude between steep sections. At the end of the ridge an 800' climb awaits, getting you to the foot of the gully and notch between the summits. From the notch, go left, climbing through a short rock section (some exposure as I recall). The rest is pretty straight forward. Nice rock and slabs at the summit. We retraced our steps for the descent, except that we got too far left as we got back near the notch and made the last 50' down to the notch more interesting than it needed to be. Very nice day, great views and well worth the effort to get there.
